Chilling Demand Emerges From First Nancy Guthrie Ransom Note
A message at the center of one of the nation’s most closely watched missing-person cases is now being heard in its chilling entirety.
Crime journalist Briana Whitney revealed the contents of the first ransom note in the Nancy Guthrie case during a special “Crime Junkie” podcast episode released Wednesday, July 22.
Guthrie, 84, is the mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie. She vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home on Sunday, Feb. 1.

Year's Most Popular Meteor Shower Under Way: Peak Viewing Coming
The wait for summer’s most anticipated sky show is over, but its biggest act is still ahead.
The Perseid meteor shower became active Friday, July 17, and will continue through Monday, Aug. 24, according to the American Meteor Society.
Activity will build toward the peak overnight from Wednesday, Aug. 12, into Thursday, Aug. 13.
This year’s timing could hardly be better. The peak will coincide with a new moon, eliminating lunar glare that might otherwise wash out faint meteors.
The moon will be zero percent full during the peak, the American Meteor Society said.

NJ Fisherman, 38, Dies Suddenly 130 Nautical Miles Off Long Island Coast: Police
A 38-year-old New Jersey fisherman died suddenly while on board a vessel off the coast of Long Island on Tuesday, July 21, police said.
Sean Smida, 38, of Toms River, fell unconscious just before 10 a.m. Tuesday when the ship was about 130 nautical miles east of Montauk Point, the East Hampton Police Department said.
The ship, a private fishing vessel, immediately headed for the U.S. Coast Guard station in Montauk and arrived around 1:30 p.m., authorities said. People on board attempted to revive Smida during the journey, cops said.

The biggest heroes in kids' lives may not need capes, theme music, or superpowers.
Parents are the top role models for children ages 4 to 12, according to a survey published Thursday, July 9, by Talker Research and commissioned by Kiddie Academy.
The survey of 2,000 parents found that children are most likely to look up to people in their everyday lives, according to Talker Research on behalf of Kiddie Academy.
Parents topped the list at 71 percent, followed by teachers at 40 percent, siblings at 37 percent, extended family members at 33 percent, and friends at 31 percent.
