Wildfire Smoke Drifting Into NJ/NYC: How Bad Will It Be?
If things looks fuzzier than usual, it wasn't your eyes focusing to adjust this morning. That was wildfire smoke is drifting from Canada into the Northeast, the National Weather Service said Wednesday morning, Aug. 14. "You may notice hazy skies today," the NWS New York office said. "It is coming from wildfire smoke, which has overspread across the area from north to south." Some New Jersey residents were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights and the Perseid Meteor Shower, visible between 1:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12. High Winds Wreak Havoc In NJ Leaving Roads Closed, Hundreds Without Power
Wind gusts up to 50 mph were wreaking havoc across New Jersey on Friday, Aug. 9. As of 2:30 p.m., thousands of residents were without power and multiple roadways were closed due to downed wires and related crashes. The National Weather Service has shifted its tornado watch across New Jersey and Pennsylvania as Hurricane Debby creeps in. In New Jersey, the tornado watch is in effect through 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 and covers Bergen, Essex, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties in North Jersey. The National Weather Service has confirmed a landspout tornado touched down in a New Jersey town last week. The EF-0 twister took down trees and flipped several cars in a post office parking lot for exactly one minute in Lawrence Township (Mercer County) on Friday, June 14. An air quality alert has been issued for several areas across New Jersey and Pennsylvania through late Friday, June 14.
